Elements of Care in the Treatment of Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a tenacious and complex inflammatory disease that stems from the body’s immune, gastrointestinal, and neurological systems. It occurs at varying ages, in all racial groups, and can have far-reaching health implications. The good news is that while the disease may not be curable, it is treatable. Symptoms can be reduced, or eliminated entirely.

My healing program combines insights gleaned from traditional treatment approaches and modern medical science. The result is an integrative, scientific and holistic approach that focuses on three core elements of care: 1.)nourish: comprehensive nutritional therapy 2.) energize: exercise, nature, and mindfulness; and 3.) restore: sun and water therapy.

Emerging science confirms that a holistic approach in the treatment of psoriasis is essential and may include lifestyle changes, pharmaceutical medications, stress reduction and emotional therapy or counseling. My extensive medical training, coupled with my personal experience with the disease, offer me a unique perspective on treating psoriasis. Your journey to optimal physical and emotional health begins here.

Nutritional therapy is a cornerstone of my treatment plan. Studies show that diet can significantly impact the symptoms of psoriasis. The total body inflammation that perpetuates the disease process can be significantly reduced and even eliminated via an anti-inflammatory diet in combination with safe methods of fasting. Nutritional intervention can also ameliorate and even reverse conditions that may stem from psoriasis, such as cardiovascular disease. A diet rich in whole and fermented foods, combined with a few key supplements, can play a vital role in restoring your health.

My ultimate goal is not just to help you conquer psoriasis, but to instill in you a passion for healthier eating habits. You won’t leave with a list of do’s and don’ts, but you will receive the detailed guidance you need to make eating healthier part of your lifestyle. Once you’ve made the decision to eat better, you will officially be on the pathway to clear skin and renewed health.

Nature has long been considered a vital element of many alternative healing traditions, and modern science confirms that immersion in nature can indeed have a powerful impact on our health. Evidence shows that many diseases are alleviated by regular “back to nature” outings, and that these effects can be as significant as taking prescription medication. Because psoriasis is a disease that is exacerbated by stress, it responds particularly well to nature therapy. I would go so far as to say no treatment plan is complete without a prescription for nature!

Similarly, regular exercise is a vital component of psoriasis treatment, as it not only tones muscles and improves circulation, it positively impacts immune balance, neurologic function, mental and emotional health and likely every system in our body!

Finally, making meditation part of your mind/body regimen is an important focal point of the treatment plan. Regular meditation actually changes the structure of your brain. (This is a good thing!) Those who have a consistent practice of meditation are more effective at processing stress and creating focus and calm. Meditation has also been shown to decrease inflammation in the body which is particularly relevant for those suffering with psoriasis.

Mindfulness through nature, regular exercise, and your unique creative expression are all aspects of mind/body health that shouldn’t be undervalued. They are, in point of fact, a vital part of your journey to clear skin and optimal health.

Balneophototherapy is a big word with a simple definition: Get thee to the spa! The therapeutic benefits of mineral baths and salt water soaks, coupled with the curative, restorative properties of ultraviolet therapy, have proven to be immensely helpful to people with psoriasis. I encourage anyone suffering from the disease to treat themselves to a healing vacation as they continue their journey toward clear skin. Choose a place where you can comfortably expose your skin to the sun and enjoy a relaxing soak in warm springs or tropical waters.

The most amazing aspect of the 3 elements of care is how beautifully they compliment each other! Not only does water and sunshine offer clear physiologic benefits, the meditative qualities of immersing yourself in nature can go a long ways toward healing your skin. Similarly, I have found that food cravings dissipate and it becomes easier to embrace a nourishing, healthful diet when you are in a natural environment. It truly is Mother Nature’s remedy for clear and beautiful skin.
